General Major Marcello Di Lauro conducted an inspection at the 61st Air Wing to verify the progress of important infrastructure projects.
Accompanied by Colonel Gennaro Cuozzo, serving at the Logistics Command Service Infrastructures, Colonel Gennaro Noviello, Commander of the 3rd Engineering Department AM and Colonel Paolo Rizzetto, Commander of the 16th Campanian Engineering Group of Palese, General Di Lauro initially attended a briefing by Captain Ivan Lucia, Head of the Off-Site Works Section of the 302nd STDI, in which the main infrastructure activities were outlined, also in light of the increasingly limited financial and economic resources available.
Subsequently, the group carried out an inspection of the infrastructure of the base affected by modernization works aimed at internationalizing the flight school of the A.M.; the fuel depot, which is now almost ready for use, the new fuel station, the layout of the operational area, the advanced state of work on the first lot and the contract for the second lot for the building to be used as accommodation, give an idea of the momentum that is at work at the Salento airport.
Finally, General Di Lauro was able to witness the preparation phase for the lifting of the metal cover of hangar 29 PG. The spatial lattice structure, with a ground plan of 57×33 meters (1881 square meters), was assembled on the adjacent parking lot and subsequently positioned at height using a huge crane, unique in its kind, which in Galatina earned the nickname “TRASFORMER”.
At the end of the visit, General Di Lauro expressed words of appreciation for the professionalism and motivation demonstrated in the complex construction activities and for the work carried out so far.
The Infrastructure Detached Technical Services depend on the A.M. Engineering Departments and provide, through both contract work and with the manpower and resources of the Campali Engineering Groups, the construction and extraordinary maintenance of airport infrastructure in support of the flight departments deployed at the Air Force bases. The main activities consist of the design, supervision of work, and testing of infrastructure works related to the operation of the aeronautical infrastructure.
