Ghedi Military Airport (Brescia), home to the 6th Wing, celebrated its first century of existence. The military ceremony was presided over by the Air Force Commander, Air Marshal Maurizio Lodovisi, accompanied by the Commander of Combat Forces, Major General Nicola Lanza de Cristoforis. General Lodovisi, a former member of the unit, recalled the key milestones of Ghedi Airport and the history of this base, whose value was also reiterated by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Marshal Pasquale Preziosa: “Ethics, competence and passion are the pillars that support the personnel of the Air Force, and you are a prime example of this.“After the flypast of the Frecce Tricolori, in the afternoon, the historic cars of the 1000 Miglia, in an event twinned with the Ghedi Military Airport, competed in a timed regularity trial, the winners of which were awarded on Sunday 17 May with a trophy sponsored by the Diavoli Rossi. The over 4000 guests also had the chance to admire a photographic exhibition, memorabilia, and historic and current aircraft of the 6th Wing. For the 100th Anniversary, a commemorative plaque was unveiled, dedicated by Gabriele D’Annunzio in 1921 to Lieutenant Luigi Olivari, a World War I “Ace” and Silver Medal for Military Valour. Furthermore, the first Philatelic Postmark was applied to commemorative postcards created by Poste Italiane, and the book ’Ghedi 100, cimento e tempra di eroiche giovinezze“ by Giovanni Merigo was published. Through testimonies, quotes, and anecdotes, the book captures the spirit of this base and its aviators who, thanks to their passion and tenacity, have made this airport great.
