The 82nd CSAR Centre of the 15th Wing in Trapani was alerted on Monday 23rd August by the Operations Command of the Air Forces in Poggio Renatico. Considering the rugged terrain, the 82nd Centre was alerted by the Operations Command of the Air Forces (COFA) in Poggio Renatico (Ferrara), following a request from the Prefecture of Trapani, which had in turn received the alert from the National Alpine and Speleological Centre. The helicopter, before reaching the site, embarked a doctor and a paramedic from the 118 of Trapani at 12:25 local time at the Birgi military airport. Arriving approximately 10 minutes after flying to the intervention site, at about 800 metres altitude on Monte Cofano, the patient was brought aboard the helicopter using a winch-operated stretcher. The helicopter then returned to the military airport, where it landed at 13:00 local time. An ambulance from the 118 was waiting for the patient for subsequent transport to the civic hospital of Trapani. The helicopter crew from the 82nd Centre consisted of pilots Captain Castaldo and Captain Maggini, onboard operators Warrant Officer 1st Class Giardi and Warrant Officer 2nd Class Onizzi, and air rescuer Warrant Officer 1st Class Gulino.

The 15th CSAR Wing, with its Groups/Centres, guarantees 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the search and rescue of flight crews in difficulty, also contributing to public utility activities such as searching for missing persons at sea or in the mountains, emergency health transport of critically ill patients, and the rescue of severely injured individuals. Since its establishment to the present day, the Wing's crews have saved approximately 6,900 people whose lives were in danger.
