The course is part of the extracurricular activities included in the study plan of the Aeronautical School of Florence. The two-week course includes flight training with the Twin Astir gliders of the Center and is part of the extracurricular activities aimed at expanding knowledge and developing character. The course includes a series of theoretical lessons and four basic flight sessions, for a total of about two hours of flight per student. The short time between theoretical lessons and flight training makes the transition from theory to practice even more effective, favoring the learning of the students. The purely technical aspects are then complemented by the opportunity to spend two weeks as protagonists within an Air Force flight department and the enthusiasm of those who approach the emotion of flight for the first time. With the “Fides” course, the intense summer activity of Volo a Vela begins; from mid-June to mid-October, the instructors of the Center will be training 137 students for a total of approximately 600 hours of glider flight.
Flying with the glider is a very effective tool for pilot training, thanks to the aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicles used, the coordination required for their operation, and not least, the low cost of operating the vehicles used.
