The students of the “Giulio Douhet” School have completed the “mountain survival techniques familiarisation” activity carried out at Mount Terminillo, in the province of Rieti
The 41 students, accompanied by Captain Gennaro Russo, their Course Commander, were supervised in their activities by an instructor from the 72nd Wing of Frosinone and were able to make use of the invaluable support of the Monte Terminillo Air Force Detachment.
The course is part of the extracurricular activities provided for in the School's Educational Offer Plan (P.O.F.) and represents an opportunity for pupils to experience educational growth outside the norm: the aims of the course are the acquisition of basic survival skills in a mountain environment in emergency and critical situations, the improvement of physical performance, and the development of the ability to manage physical and psychological stress.
The activity, which follows the standard training procedure for Italian Air Force flight personnel and fixed flight crews, was structured into a series of theoretical and practical lessons during which the trainees were able to learn, in particular, the main orientation techniques, survival skills in harsh environmental conditions, shelter building and fire-lighting in extreme conditions.
At the end of the course, the Detachment Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Luca Ranocchiari, acknowledged the professionalism and quality of the activities carried out, renewing the unit's availability as a reference point for conducting mountain training activities for the cadets.
