The extraordinary Detachment of the 70th Wing hosted the cadets engaged in the sea survival exercise. The attendees of courses “Leone V and Marte V” from the Air Force Academy of Pozzuoli participated in the exercise, under the guidance of Lieutenant Colonel Luca Fraschetti, Head of the Flight Safety Office of the 70th Wing, and with the assistance of pilots and flight technical personnel from the Latina Department.
Colonel Giovanni Francesco Adamo, Commander of the 70th Wing “Giulio Cesare Graziani”, present at the training activity, expressed full satisfaction with the excellent performance demonstrated by the personnel involved in the rescue operation, emphasizing that:“Continuous training, good physical fitness of flight crews, and knowledge of procedures enable a completely safe intervention, ensuring the achievement of the assigned mission target.“.
The trainees, abandoned at sea by a boat belonging to the National Firefighter Corps’ aquatic unit at Rio Martino-Latina, were subsequently recovered and rescued by an HH-3F Pelican helicopter from the 85th Combat Search and Rescue (C.S.A.R.) Centre of Pratica di Mare (RM).
The recovery operations were organised and conducted with the support of the 4th Technical Maintenance Department Air Defence/Flight Assistance/Telecommunications of Borgo Piave (LT) and in close coordination with the Maritime District Office of Terracina (LT).
The exercise aimed to maintain the training standard for air rescue flight crews. The Italian Air Force, through its Flying Groups and Search and Rescue Centres, ensures nationwide intervention capability to assist the civilian population as well, in all weather conditions, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.
For over half a century, the 70th Wing's Flying School has been selecting and training future pilots for the Air Force, other Armed Forces and State Armed Corps, as well as for some foreign countries.
