Participation in the 22nd edition of the Festival involves personnel from various Italian Air Force units, as well as experts from the Meteorological Service and specialist publishing.
Started on 24 October last, the 22nd edition of the scientific culture dissemination event held in the Ligurian capital will end on 3 November next. This year, among the Festival's initiatives, there is also a significant participation of the Armed Force, with the Meteorological Service and industry publishing.
Among the very numerous initiatives of the event, a meteorology workshop was created, a true journey through the activities of the Meteorological Service. It starts with observations, with the explanation and visualisation of observation capability, from the instruments in use at meteorological stations to mobile and tactical stations, to satellite remote sensing, moving on to the processing and explanation of meteorological maps aimed at generating the actual forecast, and finishing with the opportunity to try presenting the forecast in a virtual television studio. The learning journey for visitors, including many students of all school levels who are visiting the installation set up in Piazza delle Feste in the port area of Genoa, wants to emphasise the highly scientific and technological nature of the complex of activities that the Armed Force's meteorological sector carries out for the benefit of Defence and of the national system, of which the information and dissemination component through television media is merely the final part.
Also on the subject of outreach, in the area dedicated to the workshop, there is also the Armed Force's publishing stand, where it is possible to purchase specialist publishing products, which include many highly successful volumes, the Aeronautical Magazine and the Aeronautical Meteorology Review, which recently made a successful return to print.
Furthermore, on Sunday 27 October, also as part of the festival, a meeting took place entitled “Meteorology, from Earth to Space – an unbreakable bond between humanity and the sky”, which was attended by Col. Walter Villadei, astronaut recently engaged in the AX-3 mission on board the International Space Station, and experts from the Meteorological Service Colonel Daniele Mocio, Lieutenant Colonel Angela Celozzi e Lieutenant Colonel Guido Guidi. In the splendid setting of the Sala del Minor Consiglio in the Palazzo Ducale, discussions were held regarding the Armed Force's activities in the aerospace sector, including the new discipline of Space Weather, of the activities of the meteorological sector in collaboration with national and supranational bodies and institutions, and of the forecasting and meteorological information of intense and extreme events, a subject particularly felt by the Genoese community.
Participation in this edition of the Festival involves personnel from various Italian Air Force units under the direction of the 5th Department of the Air Force Staff.
Every edition of the Festival, lastly, is characterised by a keyword, a common thread that helps visitors to navigate and interpret the over 300 scheduled events from a clear and intriguing perspective. Challenges, precisely, such as those that for over a hundred years have seen the Armed Force and its assets in the meteorology and space sector at the service of the country.
