FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022: Italian Task Force achieves full operational capacity

The Italian Air Force team will compete in the defence of air space during the World Cup in Qatar.

With the deployment at the site designated by the military authorities of Qatar, the Task Force Counter-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systemof the’Italian Air Force, on its basis 16th Force Protection Wing in Martina Franca, has reached full operational capability as part of operation “Orice”, the bilateral support mission for the Armed Forces of Qatar to ensure the security of the football World Cup scheduled to take place in the Gulf emirate between 20 November and 18 December.

The C-UAS Task Force, led by Col. Massimo Gallo, will contribute to air defence to counter the potential unauthorised use of mini and micro drones, by employing a C-UAS device consisting of jammer Portable and from the stationary anti-drone system ACUSAMI Counter UAS).

The result, which comes at the end of an intense training activity carried out both domestically and upon the unit's deployment to Qatar, will allow the Blue Army personnel to implement interoperability with the assets End of day (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), for the defence CBRN (from chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats) and dog handlers Task Force Land of the’Italian Army and with Qatari and US defence systems.

The Italian Air Force personnel operate within the national joint force structure led Sassari Brigade, commanded by Brigadier General Giuseppe Bossa, which also includes the REMUS Task Force Royal Navy, contributing to the safety of coastal waters through the autonomous underwater vehicle REMUS 100, and of the’Carabinieri, which carries out consultancy activities for the security forces and special forces of Qatar and military police duties to ensure the order and security of the contingent's military personnel.
