Following last year’s success, the EUMETSAT Summer School returns to Italy with the collaboration of the Italian Air Force Meteorological Service. The purpose of the Summer School is to offer an advanced course on satellite remote sensing techniques dedicated to environmental monitoring. The participants, from various countries around the world, predominantly European, were welcomed at the Reparto di Vigna di Valle by the Director of the ReSMA, Col. Massimo Ferri, his collaborators and representatives of the National Centre for Meteorological and Aeronautical Climatology (CNMCA). After showing the guests the various divisions of the Reparto and the role played by the ReSMA within the Meteorological Service and the Armed Forces, Col. Ferri emphasized the complementarity between the remote sensing techniques applied to meteorology and environmental monitoring and the “in situ” observations, a topic that the ReSMA has been dealing with for more than 100 years. EUMETSAT is the intergovernmental European organization established to provide, through satellites, information useful to meteorology and climatic applications. It processes and distributes data, products and satellite images to the current 26 member states and other types of users worldwide. Italy, through the AM Meteorological Service, has been a member of EUMETSAT since its foundation, in 1986.
