Estonia: Italian Air Task Force completes 500 flight hours in Operation Baltic Eagle III

Italian commitment to NATO air policing in the Baltic States continues

After almost six months of operations in Estonian territory, Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft of the’Italian Air Force, redeployed to Ämari Air Base from 22 September 2025, have reached the milestone of 500 flight hours, with over 280 sorties conducted as part of operational, training and air defence exercise activities.

A significant result for Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) assets, engaged daily in the surveillance of airspace on the eastern flank of NATO.

Since the start of the deployment, 22 A-Scrambles have been carried out, confirming the continued vigilance and operational readiness ensured by the Italian air component.

To the mission of Baltic Air Policing the ground-based air defence component also contributes, with the medium-range SAMP/T missile system’Italian Army. The system, redeployed with two operational launchers and one reserve, ensured continuity of operational availability for most of the deployment period, strengthening the integrated air and space surveillance and control system. As part of the redeployment, the KRONOS radar was also deployed alongside the ARABEL radar, expanding detection and tracking capabilities.

The Air Task Force “4th Wing”, composed of approximately 250 personnel from the Italian Air Force and Army, operates in an integrated manner 24 hours a day, demonstrating a concrete joint capability in support of the Alliance's deterrence and defence posture in the Baltic region.
