In recent days, within a vast area of operations spanning Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Abruzzo and Molise, an important national exercise took place (COMAO 22-09) which has contributed to consolidating cooperation between the involved Armed Forces, making it increasingly concrete and synergistic.

The training event, conducted over two days of air and ground operations, had as its main objective to foster interaction between the‘Aeronautica Militare and the Royal Navy In the conduct of multiple missions, he saw the use of numerous 4th and 5th generation combat aircraft, as well as support assets with Command and Control, On-board Refuelling (Air-to-Air Refuelling) and the transport of troops.

In a highly complex realistic scenario, both the planning activities aimed at consolidating the integration and interoperability between the various involved entities were examined, as well as the evaluations of the operational plans and the tactics used.

Among the various operations carried out under the command of the Air Operations Command of Poggio Renatico (FE), the participation of aircraft units of the Italian Air Force in the missions was significant. Personnel Recovery for the recovery of a military pilot in a non-permissive environment, as well as in those of Close Air Support where the use of the involved units was synergistic in achieving the set goals.

The aircraft involved in the exercise were the following: F-35A and MQ-9 of the 32nd Wing, the “Typhoon” of the 36th and 37th Squadrons, the HH-101A helicopters of the 9th Stormo for the recovery and rescue of military units that have become isolated or trapped in inhospitable environments, aircraft KC-767 of the 14th Squadron Ed I T-346 aircraft of the 61st Stormo. The avionics equipment used, such as the Link-16, Vortex, VFM e Satcom, On the other hand, they have allowed to verify the high degree of interoperability achieved.

In the simulated scenario, the support of the units was fundamental. Force Protection of the Protection Group of the 36th Wing, of the specialized units Joint Terminal Attack Controller (Joint Terminal Attack Controllerand SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape) of the 16th Stormtrooper Squadron of Martina Franca (TA), as well as units of the San Marco Battalion of the Italian Navy.

The event, which took place in a climate of fruitful collaboration between all the involved parties, has favored the inter-force cooperation This is becoming increasingly common and necessary both domestically and in projects outside national borders. It has proved to be an additional valuable opportunity to strengthen the procedures for particular operational techniques and to cement relations between the various Departments of the participating Armed Forces.
