In the early afternoon today, shortly before 2:00 PM, a crew from the 82nd Combat Search and Rescue (C.S.A.R.) Centre of the Italian Air Force took off from Trapani military airport to provide rescue to a woman who was injured during a hike at Cala dei Sogni, near Castellammare del Golfo (TP).

The Italian Air Force crew, on SAR readiness duty with an HH-139B helicopter, received the immediate take-off order from the operations room of the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) of the Aerospace Operations Command in Poggio Renatico (FE), which had in turn received the request for an asset from the CNSAS.

The aircraft first headed to Castellammare del Golfo to embark a team from the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps (C.N.S.A.S.), before proceeding to the area from which the rescue request had originated.

Just over half an hour after the mission was activated, the helicopter was already on site and after lowering the air rescuer and two CNSSAS operators by winch, the woman, an American tourist injured on a particularly challenging section of the path, was secured onto a stretcher and recovered, before being flown to the same field in Castellammare del Golfo for subsequent transfer by ambulance to the nearest hospital.

Having completed the rescue, the military crew returned to the Trapani military base, where they resumed search and rescue readiness duties.

The 82nd Combat Search and Rescue Centre is one of the units of the Italian Air Force's 15th Wing that guarantees, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, continuous search and rescue for flight crews in distress, while also contributing to public utility activities such as searching for missing persons at sea or in mountains, emergency medical transport of patients in imminent danger of death, and rescue of severely injured individuals, operating even in adverse weather conditions.
