The Giulio Douhet Military Air Academy and the UNESCO Center in Florence celebrated the 64th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
On Tuesday 11 December, at the RAI Tuscany headquarters in Florence, the students of the “G.Douhet” Air Force Military School, together with students from some high schools in the city, participated in the celebrations organized by UNESCO in Florence to mark the 64th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The celebration was sponsored by the Department of Education of the Municipality of Florence. The theme chosen to celebrate this anniversary was ’The Declaration of Human Rights as seen by young people“, proposed by Lieutenant Daniele Diana of the ”G. Douhet” School to highlight both the UNESCO’s heartfelt interest in this topic and the particular attention the military school pays to UNESCO’s own activities. The meeting, attended by the Councilor for Education of the Municipality of Florence, Dr. Rosa Maria Di Giorgi, was opened by the Director of the RAI Headquarters in Florence, Dr. Andrea Jengo, who hosted the event, and by the President of the UNESCO Center in Florence, Dr. Maria Luisa Stringa. In addition to addressing the issues of Human Rights, Dr. Di Giorgi wanted to discuss with the students of the Florence schools the sense of civic conscience that is necessary to cultivate in order not to fall prey to the oppressions caused by ignorance. From this point of view, the good citizen can develop his or her own civic sensibility, which leads him or her to express their own choices through the instrument of politics. At the end, the Commander of the Douhet School, Colonel Claudio Icardi, intervened, strongly raising the awareness of the students of the ”Douhet“ on the importance of the topic of human rights, encouraging them to be attentive to the world in all its components and “in all the colors that make it up“, in order to avoid the stagnation of thought based on preconceptions, prejudices or fears. This first part was followed by a second session of the meeting, during which the staff of the UNESCO Centre, after proposing some topics, engaged interactively with the young participants, who were invited to express their views on the delicate topic of Human Rights. Furthermore, during the event, the UNESCO Center of Florence award for ”International Understanding“ was presented to Dr. Andrea Jengo, Director of the RAI Tuscany Headquarters, for his ongoing commitment in this field.
