Two pairs of F-2000 Eurofighter aircraft, one from the 4th Stormo and one from the 36th Stormo, took off to check on two civilian aircraft that had lost radio contact. In the early afternoon today, fighter aircraft Eurofighter Typhoon The Air Force, on duty in alert status for the defense of the national airspace, carried out a double intervention at the order of immediate takeoff (in technical jargon called “scramble”) to intercept and monitor two civilian aircraft that had lost radio contact with air traffic control authorities.
The Air Force ensures the surveillance of the national airspace 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, with a defense system that is integrated, even in times of peace, with that of the other countries belonging to NATO. The service is guaranteed – for the surveillance part, identification and control – by the 11th Group of Integrated Air Defense (DAMI) of Poggio Renatico (Fe) and the 22nd Group Radar of Licola (Na), while the intervention in flight is ensured by the 4th Squadron of Grosseto, the 36th Squadron of Gioia del Colle and the 37th Squadron of Trapani Birgi, all equipped with Eurofighter fighter aircraft.
