In the early afternoon today, fighter aircraftEurofighter Typhoonof the Italian Air Force, on alert duty for the defence of national airspace, carried out an intervention on an immediate take-off order (in technical jargon called a “scramble”) to intercept and check a civilian aircraft that had lost radio contact with air traffic control bodies. The Italian Air Force ensures the surveillance of national airspace 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, with a defence system that is integrated, even in peacetime, with that of other NATO member countries. The service is guaranteed – for the surveillance, identification and control part – by the 11th Integrated Missile Air Defence Group (DAMI) at Poggio Renatico (Ferrara) and the 22nd Radar Group at Licola (Naples), while airborne interception is provided by the 4th Wing at Grosseto, the 36th Wing at Gioia del Colle, and the 37th Wing at Trapani Birgi, all equipped with Eurofighter fighter jets.
