Cyber Security: Air Force Academy cadets train with Leonardo experts

“Air Force Hackademy” is the name of the training unit which, with the support of Leonardo’s “Cyber Security” Division, is continuing its preparation for the “Cyber Challenge 2022” organised by the National Inter-University Consortium for Informatics.

The rerun of “CyberShield”exercise event that Leonardo he had already been conducting since 2018 for some of his Customers. The activity, aimed at increasing sensitivity and knowledge within the scope of cyber security, were able to participate – in mode standalone – also a group of students from the Air Force Academy in Pozzuoli belonging to the Air Force Hackademy, a training unit of the Air Force Training Institute, which is preparing to take part in the 2022 edition of the Cyber Challenge organised by National Inter-university Consortium for Computer Science (CINI). 
 
The activity was based on a series of challenge, presented in the usual CTF format (Capture the flag), connected by a storyboard which allowed pupils to use and experiment with various types of techniques, with the aim of identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities present in systems. Participants were thus given the opportunity to gain experience in a fully realistic scenario that brings together the ICT and aerospace domains.
 
The exercise was structured in three phases: a Kick-off meeting, held last November 15th; a mid-term meeting; the Wrap-up At the conclusion of the activity.
 
During all phases of the event's preparation, execution, and analysis, attendees of the’Air Force Hackademy they had the opportunity to interact and receive support“remotely”from the Division's staff Cyber Security from Leonardo, part of that network of stakeholders who have supported the activities of the training units established for more than a year, with their respective skills, Air Force Academy to support attendees in growing areas of specific interest to the Armed Forces: from cyber security, precisely, to the study of Unmanned Aircraft System, studies connected to the aerospace domain and the emergency medicine sector.
 
Each participant was assigned an overall score, the value of which was weighted according to time, the difficulty of each question, and the number of hints used in competition. An Officer from the Zodiac V Course ranked first.

The’Air Force Academy It depends Air Force Schools Command / 3rd Air Region. It is a higher military education institute of a university nature tasked with recruiting and training young people aspiring to become officers in the Air Force. By attending the Regular Courses of the Academy, one can become a Second Lieutenant on a permanent active service basis in the Air Force, in the normal Navigating role (pilots) and in the Normal role of the Weapons Branch, Air Force Engineering, Air Force Commissariat Corps and Air Force Medical Corps. The Institute also runs courses for Officer Cadets (Reserve Pilots and Fixed-Term Service) and directly appointed Second Lieutenants (of both the Normal and Special Roles); finally, within the Academy's Study Plan, there are courses with an aeronautical specialisation, for foreign personnel and personnel from other Armed Forces.
