Press release no. 54/2017 WILDFIRE EMERGENCY: OVER 440,000 LITRES OF WATER DROPPED BY AIR FORCE HELICOPTERS IN ONE AND A HALF MONTHS OF ACTIVITY So far, approximately 90 flight hours have been completed, for a total of around 600 drops and more than 440,000 litres of water poured onto areas affected by fires. The operations, coordinated by the Air Operations Command of Poggio Renatico (Ferrara), in direct contact with the Unified Air Operations Centre (COAU) of the Civil Protection Department, have mainly concentrated on some locations in the Sicily region, in the provinces of Agrigento, Trapani, and Palermo. Firefighting activities were also carried out in the Sardinia region, which saw an HH-212 helicopter from the 80th CSAR Centre of Decimomannu (Cagliari) deployed once again on a mission to extinguish fires in the locality of Sorgono, in the province of Nuoro.
