Press Release No. 25/2020 Formula 1, Monza: The Frecce Tricolori will soar over the Italian Grand Prix. This year, the partnership between the world of Formula 1 motorsport and the Air Force is renewed. On Sunday 6th September, MB?339PAN aircraft from the Frecce Tricolori will fly over the starting grid of the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, unfurling the world's longest Tricolore for the occasion just before the race start. The National Acrobatic Patrol will streak across the Monza sky at the end of the Italian national anthem, performing a series of fly-pasts.
Engines and speed, but also technology, innovation, and above all teamwork, core elements that unite the Italian Air Force's flying departments and Formula 1 teams. Since its formation, the Italian Air Force has naturally been inclined towards the development of innovation and modernity, fundamental pillars that allow the Armed Force's aircraft to soar, as they have done for 97 years, through the skies of the world, following the same vocation: to be useful to the country and to operate in service of and for the defence of the community.
The flypast over the National Monza Circuit represents a further opportunity for the Frecce Tricolori to convey a message of hope, at a particular historical moment during which a strong commitment from everyone is necessary to ensure a gradual recovery towards the normality of social, work, and economic activities.
The 313th Aerobatic Training Group of the Italian Air Force was established at Rivolto Airport on 1 March 1961, with the task of representing the culmination of the capabilities of pilots and specialists. of the entire Armed Force; the mission assigned to the Group is in fact to represent the values, technology, professionalism and team spirit of the entire Air Force. The Frecce Tricolori, heirs to the glorious aerobatic teams of the past, are the most evident expression of the Italian Air Force and have the privilege of being able to demonstrate to the public and experts worldwide the flying technique of the Italian aerobatic school, which was born in Campoformido (Udine) at the end of the 1920s. In the “Fifties”, Italy was represented in various national and international events by teams that were formed annually at various fighter squadrons. However, in 1961, the Italian Air Force General Staff decided to establish a National Aerobatic Team with a permanent base at Rivolto airport, in Friuli Venezia Giulia. And so the 313th Aerobatic Training Group “Frecce Tricolori” was born, this being the official organisational designation of a Unit comprised of over 100 servicemen and women, including Officers, Warrant Officers and Enlisted personnel. of Troops from all Operational, Logistics, and Support Departments, truly representing the over 40,000 men and women who make up the Air Force today. The aircraft initially adopted was the prestigious F?86, replaced in the 1964 season by the glorious G.91 PAN. At the end of 1981, the 313th Group transitioned to the Aermacchi MB?339A PAN. An aircraft of Italian design and construction, which has accompanied the life of this Unit for almost 40 years. A flight programme, like that of the Frecce Tricolori, is the result of many years of specific activity in collective acrobatics carried out by the Italian Air Force Departments; it is therefore a heritage of experience of great importance, which has been built and passed down over time through the contribution of ideas and experiences of the members of the Italian Aerobatic Patrols. To this day, the P.A.N. has flown to over 2,000 demonstrations, visiting European countries, North African nations, the Middle East, Canada and the United States of America. In 2020 the Frecce Tricolori were due to celebrate their 60th aerobatic season, a special birthday which, due to the health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, was postponed to 2021. On the occasion of the celebrations for the 74th anniversary of the birth of the Italian Republic, the National Aerobatic Team carried out a series of flypasts, covering all the Italian regions. and symbolically embracing the entire nation with tricolour smoke, as a sign of unity, solidarity, and recovery. The Frecce Tricolori tour started from Rivolto, home of the 313th Aerobatic Training Group, and over five days, it visited all regional capitals, symbolically concluding on June 2nd with a flyover of Rome for Republic Day. A message of hope, at a particular moment in history during which strong commitment is necessary to ensure the gradual recovery of social, work and economic activities.
