Press Release No. 23/2020 COVID-19: Patient transported by Air Force helicopter from Olbia to Cagliari On the evening of Sunday 30 August, an HH-212 helicopter from the 80th CSAR (Combat Search And Rescue) Centre, belonging to the 15th Wing of the Italian Air Force, carried out the transport of a patient suffering from pneumonia and testing positive for COVID-19. The man, a sixty-nine-year-old, was transported at the request of the prefecture of Sassari from Olbia to Cagliari, where he landed at 6:30 PM after an hour’s flight, before being immediately admitted to the ’G. Brotzu“ hospital.
The patient was transported under bio-containment on board a special isolation stretcher provided by the 118 (Emergency Medical Service) and was constantly assisted by a medical team. It is the first time that an HH-212 helicopter of the Italian Air Force has been used to perform a bio-containment transport. The 15th Wing of the Italian Air Force, with its helicopters and crews specialised in Search and Rescue, has contributed to activities to combat Coronavirus since the early stages of the emergency, carrying out transports of patients, medical teams and healthcare equipment.
In particular, the HH-101 helicopters, with the support of crews from the 9th Wing of Grazzanise, were used as “flying ambulances” thanks to their ability to transport patients in bio-containment mode using special isolated stretchers (A.T.I. - Aircraft Transit Isolator).
