Press release no. 13/2020 Air Force: urgent medical transport for a twenty-day-old newborn Protected by an incubator, the infant was transported from Cagliari to Rome aboard a Falcon 900 from the 31st Wing. A newborn baby, only twenty days old and in imminent danger of life, was urgently transported this morning from Cagliari to Ciampino aboard a Falcon 900 aircraft of the 31st Wing of the Italian Air Force to be admitted to the “Bambino Gesù” hospital in Rome. The little patient was embarked on the aircraft inside a thermal cot. The request for transport, as always happens in these cases, was received from the Prefecture of Cagliari by the Top Situations Room of the Air Squad Command, the operational room of the Italian Air Force which, among its functions, also includes arranging and managing these types of missions for the benefit of the population. The Top Situations Room then activated one of the aircraft that the Armed Force keeps ready 24 hours a day, in various bases, for such needs. The Falcon 900 took off from Cagliari around midday and after about 40 minutes of flight landed at Ciampino, headquarters of the 31st Wing, from where the newborn was transferred by ambulance to the “Bambino Gesù” hospital. Through its Flying Departments, the Air Force makes available aircraft and crews ready to take off at any moment and capable of operating even in critical weather conditions to ensure the urgent transport not only of people in imminent danger of death, as happened today, but also of organs and medical teams for transplants. Hundreds of flight hours are carried out every year for this type of activity by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, and the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa.
