Centennial of the Air Force: International symposium on hypersonic capability at the Air Force Academy

Author: Public Information Office

The event will be held on Thursday 9 and Friday 10 November with the participation of leading experts in the field from the world of Defence, from the Italian aerospace sector, as well as lecturers and students from the most prestigious Italian and foreign universities.

“A New Challenge: Developing Hypersonic Capability”, this was the title of the technical-scientific symposium organised by the’Italian Air Force and which will see gathered at the Air Force Academy of Pozzuoli, on 9 and 10 November next, leading experts in the sector from the world of Defence, the Italian aerospace industry, as well as lecturers and students from the most prestigious Italian and foreign universities.

Around six months of research and analysis from over 80 military and civilian technicians, scientists, and sector experts will be summarised over the two days of the symposium through the presentation of five thematic panels that will synthesise the studies conducted in various areas deemed of interest for the future development of hypersonic capabilities: from aerodynamics to communications, from propulsion systems to materials, from spaceports to space law, and including aspects related to human physiology in space.

A subject of great current relevance and importance, that of hypersonic technology, owing to the confluence of challenges and opportunities it presents, with far-reaching implications for aerospace engineering, national defence, and scientific exploration. In an era – such as the one we are entering – characterised by an ever-increasing reliance on speed and the capacity to adapt and react, factors that in the collective imagination have always been closely linked to air and space forces, the Pozzuoli symposium aims to offer a glimpse into a near future, one that will go “beyond Mach 5”, and which, due to the complexity of the technologies involved, necessitates coordinated efforts in terms of research, development, and investment.

The symposium, which will be opened by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Luca Goretti, represents merely the final act of this long and complex multidisciplinary research project initiated by the Armed Forces in synergy with academia and industry, and aims to outline a politico-strategic perspective in a sector of significant importance for national Defence, which can also serve as an impetus for the consolidation of a “Defence economy” as a driving force for the country's technological innovation.

Joining us from the United States will also be Colonel Luca Parmitano, an experimental pilot in the Italian Air Force and an astronaut with the European Space Agency (ESA), and Nicola Pecile, a former experimental pilot in the Italian Air Force and currently a test pilot in the United States for suborbital vehicles.
