The activity was carried out to prepare for the relocation of the Brindisi Radiosonde Station to the Salento Air Base. The activity, preparatory to the relocation of the Brindisi Radiosonde Station to the Lecce airport, was carried out by the personnel of the 4th Technical Maintenance Department of Borgo Piave (Latina), in collaboration with the personnel of the aforementioned Station. In particular, certain meteorological parameters were observed using measuring instruments (radiosonde) attached to a balloon released into the atmosphere. The sensors contained within the radiosonde allowed the measurement of air temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction for each pressure level, and atmospheric pressure in relation to height, up to an altitude of approximately 35,000 metres. The collected data were immediately transmitted to the ground station via a GPS system located within the device itself. The data collected in this manner are processed, analysed and transmitted to the National Centre for Meteorology and Aeronautical Climatology of Pratica di Mare (Rome), which then enters them into the international network of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), based in Geneva (Switzerland).
