Air Brigadier General Giuseppe Addesa is the new Commander of the General Office of Military Aviation and Meteorology.
Monday, 30th September, took place, in the Hall of Heroes of Aeronautica Palace In Rome, the handover ceremony at the General Office of Military Aviation and Meteorology of the Air Staff between the Brigadier General Luca Baione and the Air Brigadier General Giuseppe Addesa.
The ceremony was presided over by Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Force General Aurelio Colagrande, and was attended not only by a representation of the General Office staff, other departments of the Staff, High Commands and branches of the Palazzo AM complex, but also by external entities with whom the Armed Force has consolidated cooperative relationships in the field of military air traffic and meteorology.
It General Baione, in his farewell speech, wanted to retrace the most important events, activities and challenges that the General Office faced and managed under his command, which began in November 2019 at the head of the General Office for Military Air Circulation (SMA UCAM), subsequently reorganised into the General Office for Military Aviation and Meteorology (SMA AVIAMM). “Numerous projects have been completed during this intense period thanks to the tenacity and preparation of all the staff. To name just a few, we have signed important agreements with ENAV for operational air traffic and the training of CTA and Meteo personnel, the first UAV flight outside segregated airspace, the full operational capability of the Military Aviation Authority, the Space Weather service for the Spaceport, and the celebration of two editions, 2023 and 2024, of World Meteorological Day, the latter of which was held at the FAO Palace. The Air Force has also returned to the Executive Council of the World Meteorological Organisation after several years, and the Meteorological Service has increased its international relevance by participating in important events at the United Nations Glass Palace and the Dubai COP. Addressing his successor, he expressed his certainty of handing over the reins ”to the right person to continue this challenging path at the helm of a strong, well-rehearsed, and cohesive team of professionals“.”.
It General Addesa, after a polite greeting to the guests who attended, thanked the High Authorities, represented by General S.A. Aurelio Colagrande, for the trust placed in us and the General Baione for the precious path expertly trodden.“I am fully aware of the innovative challenges already undertaken by the Department and those we will have to face to assert the Armed Force's dominance in the fields of military air traffic regulation and meteorology, but above all to provide our support to the aerospace forces, Defence and the nation in general with the essential services we continuously guarantee. My work will be based on certain pillars, namely ethics, professionalism and competence, with particular attention to human resources as a fundamental element for any transformation.”.

Finally addressing the two outgoing and incoming General Officers, the General Colagrande He wished to thank General Baione for the remarkable results achieved, tangible proof of his determined leadership and undeniable professionalism, and to welcome General Addesa back to the Air Force Staff family, certain that he will embrace and tackle this new and exciting challenge with motivated enthusiasm.
SMA AVIAMM It is the staff organ through which the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force is supported by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force in carrying out his functions of high technical direction, regulation, oversight and control relating to military air traffic, as well as in defining the guidelines and policies of the Armed Force in the meteorological and climatological field, also regulating the provision of the General and Aeronautical Meteorology Service.
