On Monday, April 26th, RAI cameras visited the Gioia del Colle Air Base for the activation of the new Meteorological Office. Colonel Gianpaolo Marchetto, Commander of the Wing, described the tasks of the unit and the specific characteristics of the Eurofighter fighter jet assigned to the crews of the XII Group, for use in Air Defence operations. The 36th Wing, which has been operating the fighter since October 1st, 2007, will also receive a second Flight Group, completing the unit's transformation phase. Within the scope of Air Defence and flight operations in general, a fundamental task is performed by Air Traffic Control Service, as highlighted on television by Lieutenant Colonel Giuseppe Talamo, Commander of the 436th Operational Technical Services Group. He emphasised the activities carried out in the radar operations room and the base tower, where air traffic is continuously monitored to ensure the safe execution of all flight operations. Air Traffic Service, together with Meteorological Service, directly supports flight operations. Given the importance of the Meteorological Service's support, not only for the flight operations of the 36th Wing's aircraft, the recently inaugurated new infrastructure will enable greater efficiency and effectiveness in the management of meteorological data. Indeed, as recalled on television by Lieutenant Francesco Serini, Head of the Wing's Meteorological Data Section, the possibility of having IT systems capable of processing the data in various ways is of fundamental importance, allowing flight crews to receive weather forecasts that are as accurate as possible to real-world conditions.
