An aircraft of the 31st Wing of Ciampino transported from Catanzaro to Rome a young patient in need of urgent specialist medical treatment
The transport request was sent by the Prefecture of Catanzaro to the Situation Room of the Italian Air Force General Staff, which ordered the immediate execution of the flight. The aircraft, which departed from Ciampino at 09:40, landed at Lamezia Terme airport at 10:40, where it embarked the small patient, suffering from a brain tumour, before departing again, after just 10 minutes, for Ciampino airport. At the Roman military airport, an ambulance from the Wing's infirmary was waiting for the child to transport him, along with his mother, near the 118 emergency helicopter which carried out the subsequent transfer to the “Agostino Gemelli” Policlinic in Rome.
Aircraft of the 31st Wing based in Ciampino are used for state transport and public utility missions, such as emergency medical transport for the sick, those with severe trauma and organs for transplants, as well as operations to assist individuals in at-risk situations. This latter activity, given the imminent danger to the lives of those being transported, requires a level of readiness twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.
