The baby, who needed to be transported to the Gaslini hospital in Genoa, travelled with a medical team on a G650 aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino.
The urgent medical transport of a has just concluded with its landing in Genoa. Five-year-old girl admitted to the “Bianchi – Melacrino – Morelli” Metropolitan Grand Hospital in Reggio Calabria and requiring urgent transfer to the Giannina Gaslini Paediatric Hospital in Genoa.
The flight, as foreseen by the procedures for this type of activity, was authorised by the Prime Minister's Office, which manages and coordinates the activities of the State aircraft fleet.
The activation was requested by the Prefecture of Reggio Calabria to the Summit Situation Room of the Air Squadron Command of Milan of the Italian Air Force, which immediately involved the 31st Wing of Ciampino, one of the Units that carries out standby service for these types of missions.
Following all necessary procedures by the military crew, the G650 took off from Ciampino Airport bound for Reggio Calabria Airport in the early afternoon, where the little one was immediately boarded with a medical team. After landing at Genoa-Sestri Airport, which took place shortly before 4:00 PM, an ambulance provided for the subsequent transfer to the destination hospital for admission.
This type of activity for the benefit of the community is one of the institutional tasks carried out by the Italian Air Force. Flight Units are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of operating, even in complex weather conditions, to ensure urgent transport not only of people in imminent danger of death, but also of organs, medical teams or ambulances.
Every year, hundreds of flight hours are carried out for this type of intervention by aircraft from 31st Wing of Ciampino, of 14th Practice Wing of Pratica di Mare, of 46th Air Brigade of Pisa from the helicopters of the 15th Wing, Cervia Air Base.
