Italian Air Force: life-saving flight from Cagliari to Rome for a newborn of just 13 days

Initial press release description

The life-saving flight carrying a newborn baby just 13 days old, who was in imminent danger of death, has recently concluded. The baby was urgently transported from Cagliari to Ciampino (Rome) by an Italian Air Force Falcon 50 aircraft.

The young patient was embarked inside a thermal cot on the military aircraft belonging to the 31st Wing of the Air Force, accompanied by both parents and specialised medical personnel.

The request for transport from the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria of Cagliari to the Bambino Gesù Paediatric Hospital in Rome, as per emergency procedures, was received by the Summit Situations Room of the Air Squadron Command from the Prefecture of Cagliari. This is the operations room of the Italian Air Force, which among its functions also includes arranging and managing these types of missions for the benefit of citizens.

The Falcon 50, which took off from Cagliari Airport, landed at Ciampino military airport around 1.30 PM.

The young patient was immediately transferred by ambulance to the “Bambino Gesù” Paediatric Hospital in the Capital.

Crews and transport aircraft of the Air Force are ready day and night, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day to ensure, where requested and deemed necessary for reasons of urgency, the medical transport of people in imminent danger of life, organ transport or medical teams.

Hundreds of flight hours are carried out each year for this type of operation by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare and the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa, and by helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia.
