A 2-day-old newborn, in imminent danger of death, travelled on board an aircraft from the 31st Wing of the Italian Air Force
The emergency medical transport of a 2-day-old newborn from Cagliari to Milan Linate, carried out with an Italian Air Force F900 EASY aircraft, concluded in the middle of the night.
The child, in imminent danger of life, required urgent transfer from the Duilio Casula Hospital of Monserrato (Cagliari) to the Institute for Research and Care of a Scientific Nature (IRCCS) Policlinico San Donato Milanese (Milan).
This type of activity, for the benefit of the community, is one of the institutional tasks carried out by the Air Force. The life-saving flight was activated, at the request of the Prefecture of Cagliari, by the Air Force's Summit Situation Room, which immediately involved the 31st Wing, one of the Departments that carries out operational readiness service for this type of mission.
Following all necessary procedures by the military crew, the aircraft took off from Ciampino Airport, landing at Cagliari Elmas shortly after midnight. The young patient was immediately boarded onto the aircraft for urgent transport.
After landing at Milan Linate Airport at 01:45 local time, the ambulance, carrying the newborn baby, her parents, and the medical team, proceeded to the San Donato Polyclinic for subsequent hospitalisation.
The Italian Air Force's flight departments are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of operating, even in complex weather conditions, to ensure the urgent transport not only of individuals in imminent danger of life, but also of organs, medical teams, or ambulances.
Hundreds of flight hours are carried out each year for this type of operation by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa, and by helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia.
