A newborn baby, in imminent danger of losing its life, travelled on board an aircraft from the 31st Wing to be urgently transferred to the Gaslini Hospital in Genoa.
The urgent medical transport of a neonate, just one day old, from Alghero to Pisa was completed in the early hours of today, carried out by an Italian Air Force Gulfstream G650 aircraft.
The infant, in imminent danger of life, needed to be transferred urgently from the Neonatal Clinic of the Sassari University Hospital to the Gaslini Hospital in Genoa. The newborn travelled inside the aircraft, monitored and assisted by a medical team.
This type of public service activity is one of the institutional tasks carried out by the Air Force.
The life-saving flight was activated, at the request of the Prefecture of Sassari, by the Summit Situational Room of the Air Force of the Milan Air Squad Command, which immediately involved the 31st Wing, one of the Units that carries out operational readiness service for this type of mission.
The flight, as is the case for this type of activity, was authorised by the Prime Minister's Office, which manages and coordinates the activities of the State aircraft fleet.
The Italian Air Force's flying units are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of operating, even in complex weather conditions, to ensure the urgent transport of not only people in imminent danger of death, but also organs, medical teams, or ambulances. Hundreds of flight hours are carried out each year for these types of missions by aircraft from the 31st Wing at Ciampino, the 14th Wing at Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade at Pisa, and helicopters from the 15th Wing at Cervia.
