This is the second life-saving mission in the last 24 hours, carried out by a crew of the 31st Wing with a Gulfstream G650 aircraft.
A medical emergency transport for a 66-year-old man, in imminent danger of death, was completed this evening, carried out with a Gulfstream G650 aircraft from the 31st Wing of the Air Force.
The patient, admitted to the Policlinico Madonna della Consolazione in Reggio Calabria, required immediate transfer to the Policlinico di Sant’Orsola in Bologna, a facility suitable for treating their condition.
The urgent flight was activated, at the request of the Prefecture of Reggio Calabria, by the Summit Situation Room of the Air Squad Command – the operational room of the Air Force – which immediately involved the 31st Wing, a unit on operational readiness for this type of mission.
The operational procedures have been completed. The aircraft departed from Ciampino Airport for Reggio Calabria, where the patient was embarked and continuously monitored by a specialised medical team. Subsequently, the aircraft reached Bologna Airport, landing after 9 PM. From there, the patient was transferred by ambulance to the destination hospital for admission.
The flight, as is the case for this type of activity, was authorised by the Prime Minister's Office, which manages and coordinates the activities of the State aircraft fleet.
Urgent medical transport missions are one of the institutional tasks of the Air Force, which ensures its availability 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for the transport of patients in life-threatening conditions, organs, medical teams, and ambulances, even in complex weather conditions. Every year, hundreds of flight hours are dedicated to this service by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa, and by helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia.
