The 670th Liaison and Rescue Flight of Decimomannu was alerted on Thursday 7th October by the Air Operations Command (COA). The 670th Flight was alerted by the Air Operations Command (COA) of Poggio Renatico (Ferrara), following a request from the National Alpine Rescue Corps. Before arriving at the scene, the helicopter embarked two Alpine Rescue technicians who were experts in the area at the ‘S. Francesco’ hospital in Nuoro. The helicopter crew, having arrived near the area at 10.51 local time, began the search and, once the two hikers were located, landed for their subsequent recovery. Afterwards, the helicopter headed to Nuoro at the ‘San Francesco’ Hospital where it landed at 11.08 local time. Once the disembarkation operations were completed, the helicopter then returned to Decimomannu where it landed at 11.50 local time. The crew of the 670th Flight helicopter consisted of the pilots Lieutenant Alessandro Anzà and Lieutenant Andrea Trojani, the flight engineer, First Warrant Officer Ruggero Meloni, and the air rescue specialist, Warrant Officer Stefano Barbieri.
