On 30 July 2010 at Frosinone Airport, 11 Italian Army student pilots received their military helicopter pilot certificates. The ceremony, presided over by Colonel Maurizio Masi, Commander of the 72nd Wing, was attended by Army Corps General Enzo Stefanini, Commander of the Army Aviation based in Viterbo. The students“ training course lasted ten months at the helicopter school and saw them engaged in an initial theoretical phase, lasting seven weeks of ground study, at the ”INSIAU" multimedia classroom of the Professional Training Group during which they were able to learn all the information necessary to tackle the subsequent flight phase. Following a demanding flight phase, the students obtained their military helicopter pilot licence.
The 72nd Wing is the Italian Air Force's only flight school in the rotary-wing sector. The Wing is tasked with training military pilots from the Air Force and Navy to fly helicopters; and issuing helicopter pilot licences to personnel from the Army, Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza, State Police and Fire Service.
The Wing also runs courses for foreign pilots, qualifies and certifies helicopter flight instructors, and is involved in conducting technical courses for helicopter specialist personnel of the Armed Forces and State Corps.
