Italian Air Force: 31st Wing successfully completes urgent transport from Catanzaro to Bologna

A Falcon 50 enabled the rapid transfer of a patient destined for the Montecatone Rehabilitation Institute in Imola.

The emergency medical transport of a 21-year-old man from Lamezia Terme Airport (CZ) to Bologna concluded at 11:50 today. It was carried out with a Falcon 50 aircraft from the 31st Wing of the Italian Air Force, based in Ciampino (RM).

The patient, in serious condition, needed to be urgently transferred from the “Pugliese-Ciaccio” Hospital Company of Catanzaro to the Montecatone Rehabilitation Institute in Imola (BO). A medical team was also on board to assist the young man.

Emergency medical transport is one of the institutional activities that the Air Force carries out in service of the community. The flight, defined as “IPV – Imminent Danger to Life”, was activated at the request of the Prefecture of Catanzaro to the Summit Situation Room of the Air Force Air Squad Command (COA). This immediately involved the 31st Wing of Ciampino, one of the units that carries out operational readiness for this type of mission. Once they arrived at Bologna Airport, where an ambulance was already waiting for the patient, the crew and aircraft returned to Base, becoming available again for immediate deployment if necessary.

The Italian Air Force's flight departments are available to the public 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with aircraft and crews capable of transporting patients, organs, medical teams, and ambulances, even in complex weather conditions. Hundreds of flight hours are carried out each year for these types of missions by aircraft from the 31st Wing in Ciampino, the 14th Wing in Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade in Pisa, and by helicopters from the 15th Wing in Cervia, stationed at various bases from the north to the south of the country.
