Sardinia: 13-day-old newborn urgently transported from Alghero to Ciampino with an Air Force Falcon 900
The urgent medical transport of a tiny patient, only 13 days old, from the Sardinian airport of Alghero to Rome-Ciampino airport, carried out with a Falcon 900 military transport aircraft of the 31st Wing of the Air Force, concluded this afternoon.
The medical flight made it possible to quickly transfer the newborn baby from the University Teaching Hospital of Sassari, where she was hospitalised, to the Bambino Gesù Paediatric Hospital in Rome.
Emergency medical transport is one of the institutional activities that the Air Force carries out in service to the community. The flight was activated at the request of the Prefecture of Sassari to the Summit Situation Room of the Air Squad Command, the operational room of the Air Force which, among its functions, also includes ordering and managing these types of missions.
The 31st Wing, one of the units that performs operational readiness service for urgent medical transport, was immediately alerted.
The Italian Air Force's Flying Squadrons are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of ensuring the transport of patients, organs, medical teams, and ambulances, even in complex weather conditions.
Hundreds of flight hours are carried out each year for this type of mission, by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa, and by helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia.
