Emergency transport: Air Force aircraft transfers a two-month-old infant from Cagliari to Milan
A Falcon 900 from Ciampino's 31st Wing enabled the young patient to reach the San Donato Polyclinic quickly.
The Italian Air Force aircraft, which carried out the urgent medical transport of a two-month-old infant, landed at 13:13 at Milan Linate Airport. The infant was transported from the Duilio Casula Hospital in Monserrato (Cagliari) to the San Donato Milanese Polyclinic (Milan).
The Falcon 900 of the 31st Wing had departed from Ciampino base shortly after 10:30 AM, heading towards Cagliari-Elmas airport, where it embarked the critically ill child, who travelled in a thermal cot, accompanied by their parents and a medical team composed of a doctor and a nurse.
Urgent aeromedical transport is one of the institutional activities that the Air Force carries out in service to the community. The flight, defined in this case as “IPV – Imminent Danger to Life,” was activated at the request of the Prefecture of Cagliari to the Summit Situational Room of the Air Squad Command, the operational room of the Air Force which, among its duties, also includes activating and managing urgent aeromedical transports. This immediately involved the 31st Wing of Ciampino, one of the Departments that carries out the operational readiness service for this type of mission. Once they arrived at the destination airport, where an ambulance was already waiting to transfer the baby to hospital, the aircraft and crew departed for Ciampino, where they landed around 2:30 PM, returning ready for deployment if necessary.
The Italian Air Force's flight departments are available to the public 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with aircraft and crews capable of transporting patients, organs, medical teams, and ambulances, even in complex weather conditions. Hundreds of flight hours are carried out each year for these types of missions by aircraft from the 31st Wing in Ciampino, the 14th Wing in Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade in Pisa, and by helicopters from the 15th Wing in Cervia, stationed at various bases from the north to the south of the country.
