Italian Air Force: Newborn urgently transported to Genoa by a 31st Wing aircraft
Just three days old, the young patient had to be transferred from Cagliari aboard a Falcon 50 aircraft
The urgent medical transport of a baby, born three days ago, from Cagliari-Elmas Airport (CA) to Genoa, carried out by an Air Force Falcon 50 aircraft from Ciampino Airport (RM), base of the 31st Wing, concluded shortly after 1 p.m. today.
The young patient, in imminent danger of her life, needed to be urgently transferred from the “Duilio Casula” Hospital in Monserrato (Cagliari) to the “Gaslini” Paediatric Institute in Genoa. The newborn travelled in a heated incubator, accompanied by a specialised medical team and both her parents.
Emergency medical transport is one of the institutional activities that the Aeronautica Militare carries out in service of the community. The flight, defined in this case as “IPV – Imminent Peril to Life”, was activated at the request of the Prefecture of Cagliari to the Summit Situation Room of the Aeronautica Militare Air Squad Command. This immediately involved the 31st Stormo of Ciampino, one of the Units that carries out operational readiness service for this type of mission. Once they arrived at Genoa airport, where an ambulance was already waiting for the little girl, the Falcon 50 returned to Ciampino, becoming available again for immediate deployment if necessary.
The Italian Air Force's flight units are available to the public 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with aircraft and crews capable of transporting patients, organs, medical teams, and ambulances, even in complex meteorological conditions.
Hundreds of flight hours are carried out every year for this type of mission by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa, and by helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia, stationed in various bases from the north to the south of the country.
