Sardinia, air ambulance: Italian Air Force aircraft transports newborn from Alghero to Rome
The baby, just one day old, was transported in a Falcon 900 of the 31st Wing of the Air Force.
The emergency medical repatriation of a newborn, just one day old, transported from Alghero to Rome by an Air Force's 31st Wing Falcon 900 aircraft, based at Ciampino, has just concluded.
The child, whose life was in danger, needed to be transported with extreme urgency and the utmost promptness from the AOU of Sassari to the Bambino Gesù Paediatric Hospital in Rome, to receive specific treatment.
The Falcon 900, which took on board at Alghero-Fertilia airport the infant transported with the aid of an incubator and assisted by a medical team, departed in the early afternoon, reaching Rome Ciampino airport after about an hour of flight.
From here, the young patient, who was met by an ambulance, was able to reach the destination hospital in a short time.
Emergency medical transport is one of the institutional activities that the Air Force carries out in service to the community. The flight, defined as “IPV – Imminent Danger to Life”, was activated at the request of the Prefecture of Cagliari to the Top Situation Room of the Air Squadron Command, the operational room of the Air Force which, among its functions, also includes ordering and managing these types of missions. The 31st Wing, one of the Units that carries out the operational readiness service for emergency medical transport, was therefore immediately involved.
The Italian Air Force Flight Departments are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of ensuring the transport of patients, organs, medical teams and ambulances, even in complex weather conditions.
Hundreds of flight hours are carried out each year for these types of operations, by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa, and by helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia.
