Italian Air Force: helicopter makes precautionary landing off-field in the province of Latina after striking cables
The aircraft crew were unharmed and there was no damage to other people or property.
In the late afternoon of yesterday, Wednesday, January 10th, an HH-101 helicopter of the 9th Wing of the Italian Air Force, during a night training mission departing from the home base of Grazzanise (CE), made an off-base landing in the Minturno area (Latina) after accidentally hitting an electrical cable in flight.
The crew, in accordance with procedures, following the impact and having identified a suitable landing zone, preemptively brought the aircraft down for further checks. The second helicopter, of the same type, which was participating in the training mission, after ascertaining that the first helicopter had landed safely, returned to the Grazzanise base.
The crew members reported no problems whatsoever, nor have any other people or things been involved, with the exception of the electrical cable that was struck.
Following thorough checks by a team of specialists and maintainers from the Armed Forces, the helicopter will return to its home base.
As is standard practice in such cases, a team of experts has been assembled to ascertain the sequence of events and the causes of the incident for prevention purposes.
Night flying training is an integral part of maintaining fundamental operational capabilities that allow Armed Forces crews and aircraft to operate safely in all conditions, both in support of air operations and in the event of emergencies, to assist the civilian population.
