Nicknamed by the English “Longnose” (Long-nosed) due to the pronounced engine cowling, it was the most widespread advanced Italian fighter of the Second World War. Fast and manoeuvrable, robust and reliable, the Macchi MC.202 represents the evolution of the MC.200, for which it develops the constructive concept around the powerful DB 601 inline engine.
Capable of reaching 600 km/h, it was highly appreciated by pilots, although the armament of just two 12.7 mm weapons was insufficient for an aircraft of this class. Deployed on all fronts of the war (from Russia, to Africa, to metropolitan territory), it remained in service until 1948.
The specimen on display is one of two existing MC.202s.
