Author: Major Sergeant Veronica Buono

On Saturday, May 21, at the PalaOlimpia in Verona, the 3rd Stormo took part in the event. World Robot Olympiad with the R.O.V., that is, the Remotely Operated Vehicles, Robots used for the recognition and deactivation of regulated or improvised explosive devices.

The event, organized over 85 Countries all over the world from World Robot Olympiad Association, The association, founded in 2004, allows children and young people aged 6 to 19 to participate in scientific and technological activities related to the field of automation.

During tournaments, competitors hone their skills by competing in robotics competitions with the goal of developing Software and devices to solve problems of various types and improve the quality of life.

The challenges that have occurred throughout the race have tested the participants with increasing difficulty starting from the KIDS category up to the SENIOR category. Guided by a coach, The teams, composed of two or three people, competed in three different competitions: ROBOMISSION: building a robot; FUTURE INNOVATORS: developing a scientific project; FUTURE ENGINEERS: designing and building a vehicle that moves on a field while avoiding obstacles.

During the event dedicated to robotics, the 3rd Wing He described his operational activities carried out with the help of remote-control systems, which are indispensable in operations outside national borders and are also used in special cases on national territory.

It 3rd Wing It has several types of R.O.V., which can be used simultaneously depending on the context of the intervention. In particular, the R.O.V. model “Defender”It allows for the localization of suspicious objects through a sophisticated system of cameras operating also in the infrared spectrum, examining their interior using an X-ray system, and eventually proceeding to secure those identified as weapons. Similar capabilities characterize the “Packbot 510” tracked robot, which is significantly smaller in size compared to the “Defender” R.O.V., but is easier to insert into cramped environments.

The young contestants had the opportunity to remotely pilot the “Scout“The smallest of them all robot On display, which due to its features of use and its agility has aroused great interest. The mayor of Verona, Federico Sboarina, and the honorable Dal Moro were also present at the event, who appreciated the military equipment on display, being impressed by the professionalism and technical competence of the specialized personnel of the Air Force.

Under the responsibility of Support Services del Logistics Command of the Air Force, the 3rd Wing, with the specialized technical and operational capabilities of the EOD Operational Unit (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) Nord confirms the dual nature of its mission, which is aimed both at military objectives and at activities of civil interest for the protection and safeguarding of the national territory.
