The Head of U.S. Space Command, General Stephen N. Whiting, on 9 March in Rome by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Force Corps General Antonio Conserva, at the Aeronautical Palace. The meeting confirms the strength of the relationship in the space sector, which today holds ever-increasing importance for international security.

During the interview, the two leaders reviewed the current geopolitical landscape and the prospects for cooperation between their respective organisations in the field of space operations. Particular attention was paid to multi-domain integration, i.e. the ability to connect activities taking place in the air, on the ground, at sea, in cyberspace and in space with ever-increasing effectiveness, which is now considered an essential element for the success of modern operations.

It General Whiting has underlined how space is now a “warfighting domain”, meaning a strategic operational domain in all respects. In an international context marked by increasing instability, also due to the crises in the Middle East, it is indeed becoming ever more important to protect orbiting infrastructure, upon which communications, observation, navigation, and, more generally, the response capability of armed forces depend.

On his part, the General Store reiterated the leading role of the Air Force in the development of the Italian Defence's space component, highlighting the need to invest in advanced technologies. Among these, Space Domain Awareness (SDA), fundamental for monitoring what is happening in space, and the Responsive Launch, that is, the ability to quickly access space autonomously, if necessary.
During the meeting, the need for a real paradigm shift to face future challenges also emerged. “It will be crucial to implement advanced systems that allow us full domain awareness and a timely response to emerging threats,” declared Generalconserva. Furthermore, space capabilities will be increasingly decisive for next-generation systems, including sixth-generation combat aircraft, which will require unprecedented levels of connectivity, coordination, and information superiority.

General Whiting's visit confirms the climate of deep mutual trust in the aerospace sector, an essential element for strengthening security and deterrence in an increasingly complex global context. At the same time, the Defence and the Air Force confirm themselves as strategic partners between the United States and Europe, capable of fostering the connection between national, European and Atlantic Alliance initiatives.

Generale di Squadra Aerea Antonio Conserva meets General Stephen N. Whiting, Commander of U.S. Space Command, at Air Force Headquarters

During the meeting with the Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force, topics discussed included bilateral cooperation and the strategic value of the space domain.

General Stephen N. Whiting, Commander of the U.S. Space Command, was received on 9 March in Rome by Air Force Corps General Antonio Conserva, Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force, at Palazzo dell’Aeronautica. The meeting confirms the strength of the relationship in the space sector, which is assuming an increasingly central role in international security.

During the talks, the two leaders reviewed the current geopolitical environment and the prospects for cooperation between their respective organisations in the field of space operations. Particular attention was devoted to multi-domain integration, namely the capacity to connect, ever more effectively, activities conducted in the air, on land, at sea, in cyberspace and in space, which is now regarded as an essential element for the success of modern operations.

General Whiting underlined that space is now a “warfighting domain”, that is, a fully fledged strategic operational domain. In an international context marked by growing instability, including as a result of the crises in the Middle East, protecting orbital infrastructure is becoming increasingly important, as communications, observation, navigation and, more broadly, the responsiveness of the armed forces depend upon it.

For his part, General Conserva reaffirmed the leading role of the Italian Air Force in developing the space component of Italian Defence, highlighting the need to invest in advanced technologies. These include Space Domain Awareness (SDA), which is essential to monitor activities in space, and Responsive Launch, namely the ability to access space rapidly and autonomously whenever required.

The meeting also highlighted the need for a genuine paradigm shift in order to address future challenges effectively. “It will be essential to implement advanced systems that enable us to achieve full domain awareness and a timely response to emerging threats.” General Conserva stated.

Space capabilities will also become increasingly decisive for next-generation systems, including sixth-generation combat aircraft, which will require unprecedented levels of connectivity, coordination and information superiority.

General Whiting’s visit confirms the climate of deep mutual trust in the aerospace field, an essential factor in strengthening security and deterrence in an increasingly complex global environment. At the same time, Defence and the Italian Air Force reaffirm their role as strategic interlocutors between the United States and Europe, capable of fostering closer alignment among national, European and NATO initiatives.
