NATO AIR POLICING: F35 AIRCRAFT IN SUPPORT OF ICELAND'S AIR DEFENCE

The Italian Air Force F-35 aircraft are supporting Iceland's air defence capability in the NATO Northern Lightning II mission.

The F-35 aircraft of the Italian Air Force are supporting Iceland's air defence capability in Nato's Northern Lightning II mission. All personnel involved have undergone rigorous training.screeninghealth screening before entering the operational theatre, also carrying out a precautionary isolation period both in Italy and in Iceland. The health protocol followed during the severe pandemic caused by Covid19, however, did not affect organisational and management capabilities of the Task Force which, from the first day of deployment, has carried out the technical and logistical preparation activities for the start of the mission.
The Italian Air Force continually participates in’Interim Air Policing Slovenia, since 2004, Albania, from 2009, Montenegro from 2018, and has already been involved in Iceland five times since 2013, as well as operating on missions Enhanced Air Policing in favour of Eastern flank member countries such as Bulgaria, Romania and Estonia. In the latter case, this involved enhanced airspace surveillance activity, thereby reducing costs and maximising efficiency, primarily by employing F-2000 aircraft. Eurofighter. The’Air Policing(AP) is a capability that NATO equipped itself with from the mid-fifties and consists of the integration of the respective national systems of the member countries into a single NATO air and missile defence system. The activity ofAir Policingit has been conducted since peacetime and consists of the continuous surveillance of NATO airspace and the identification of any violations thereof.
