SPADA Missile System Data Sheet

The SPADA is a surface-to-air point defence system produced by MBDA Italia SpA and purchased by the Italian Air Force in 1982. The SPADA was created with the aim of detecting, engaging and neutralising high-speed, low and very low altitude threats from the sky across 360°, in any weather condition. It primarily consisted of a Detection Centre and 3 Firing Sections, each capable of launching up to 12 ASPIDE missiles. In 2001, the SPADA underwent a Technical-Logistical Modernisation (ATL) programme which included, in addition to resolving various obsolescences, the integration of the Link 11B communication protocol and significant modifications to make it air-transportable. The SPADA System was decommissioned by the Italian Air Force in 2024.

Standard configuration of a SPADA battery:

  • A Surveillance Centre characterised by a Search and Interrogation Radar, a Command and Control Centre and three power generators;
  • Three fire sections, each equipped with a tracking and illuminating Radar, two missile launchers with 6 cells for a total of twelve ASPIDE missiles, two power generators.

Technical Specifications:

Interception radius targets 15 km (altitude 5000 m). Coverage area with 4 firing sectors 800 km2. Ready to fire up to 48 missiles. Reaction time from target identification is 15 seconds.
