Caproni Ca.161

MExperimental biplane seaplane built in the mid-thirties.

It was designed to challenge the height record held by Great Britain of 15.229 metres.

It was tested in 1937 using a special multi-layered rigid diving suit, which allowed survival at altitude albeit with limited movement.

The rarefaction of oxygen at high altitudes, necessary for the functioning of a piston engine, made it seem impossible to break the English record, but thanks to numerous technical refinements, in 1938, it was possible to reach 17,083 metres with Gen. Pezzi, a record still unbeaten today for unpiloted piston-engined aircraft.

In 1939, it was used as a seaplane thanks to the installation of floats.
