Twin-engine, five-bladed helicopter, used for search and rescue operations, medical evacuation, transport missions or support for special forces, and also in the SMI (Slow Mover Interceptor) role.
The HH-3F “Pelican” retains the S-61's configuration with two 1,500 CVA turboshafts at take-off.
The rescue equipment included medical apparatus and a 272 kg capacity winch from which to suspend a stretcher.
In the mid-70s, the Air Force chose the HH-3F to replace the HU-16 Albatross amphibians.
They were assigned to the rescue centres: 85th Ciampino, 83rd Rimini, 82nd Trapani and the 84th Brindisi.
The activity has continued ever since with innumerable interventions in difficult conditions, often at sea or at night.
