The aeroplane was tested in May 1941. It was an all-metal monoplane with a stressed-skin structure.
The fighter was initially used by the Americans for escort duties and, subsequently, in a tactical role where its extraordinary structural robustness was of fundamental importance.
It was distributed in post-war Italy to the 5th and 51st Wings, but some technical problems arose which led to its “downgrading” to visual and photographic reconnaissance.
