Thanks to a synergy between the Command 1st Air Region, the Dobbiaco Airport Detachment, the Group Efficienza Aeromobili (G.E.A.) of 51st Wing from Istrana (Treviso) and the 28th Group of the 32nd Stormtrooper Squadron of Amendola (Foggia), restoration work was carried out – between September and mid-November – on the Gate Guardian FIAT G-46 4B, a biplane aircraft that required significant work to preserve the integrity of the historic aircraft in the operational area of the Reparto della Val Pusteria.

Of note is the restoration work carried out by the specialized technicians of the G.E.A., who, within the specially constructed scaffolding covered by a large tarp to protect it from the elements, did not actually move the aircraft from its installation, completing the work by restoring the livery of the historic aircraft, under which the propellers were mounted, restored by the 28th Group and subsequently painted by the G.E.A. of the 51st Flight.

It G-46 It was a low-wing monoplane training aircraft, produced by FIAT Aviazione between 1948 and 1952 in 233 units. It made its first flight on June 25, 1947. Built from light metal alloy equipped with an Alfa Romeo 115 air-cooled six-cylinder inline engine. It was used by the Air Forces of Italy, Austria, Argentina and Syria. This 5th Series aircraft with Military Registration Number 53302 is one of the 141 units that were in service with the A.M. until the late 1950s, when with the advent of the North American T-6, the G-46s were withdrawn. Of the 50 units handed over to the Aeroclub d’Italia for the reequipping of the federated Aeroclub fleet, the current example was hosted at the Cameri airport.

The Airport Detachment of Dobbiaco, which is subordinate to the Command of the 1st Air Region of Milan, provides support for Mountain Survival Courses (Flight Safety), Training Departments in the context of international exercises and Airmanship Maintenance Courses on hangars; to this is added the monitoring of meteorological parameters on the ground.
