Press release no. 56/2017 Urgent medical flight from Reggio Calabria to Rome for a girl in life-threatening danger A 12-year-old girl in imminent danger of death was urgently transported today morning from Reggio Calabria to Rome-Ciampino by a Falcon 900 aircraft of the 31st Air Force Wing to be admitted to the “Bambino Gesù” paediatric hospital in Rome. The request for transport, as happens in such cases, was received by the Prefecture of Reggio Calabria at the Air Squadron Command's Summit Situations Room, the Air Force's operations room, one of whose tasks is to organise and manage this type of transport throughout Italy in coordination with the Prefectures. The Summit Situations Room has therefore activated a Falcon 900, one of the assets that the Armed Force keeps ready 24 hours a day for this type of need. Having taken off in the morning from Ciampino airport, the headquarters of the 31st Wing, to Reggio Calabria, the aircraft boarded the patient together with a medical team for assistance during the flight. After departing from the Calabrian city, the aircraft landed after about an hour's flight at Rome-Ciampino airport, from where the girl was transported by ambulance. Missions of this kind require the utmost timeliness. Through its flight departments, the Air Force provides means and crews ready to take off at any time and able to operate in all weather conditions to ensure the urgent transport not only of people whose lives are in imminent danger, as happened today, but also of organs and medical teams for transplants. Thousands of flight hours are flown every year by the aircraft of the 31st Wing at Ciampino, the 14th Wing at Pratica di Mare and the 46th Air Brigade at Pisa, assets that are always on the front line in case of emergency.
