Press Release no. 113/2018 AERONAUTICS: URGENT MEDICAL TRANSPORT FOR A NEWBORN OF A FEW HOURS
This afternoon, Tuesday 4 December, a newborn baby, hours old and in imminent danger of life, was transported with the utmost urgency from Cagliari to Rome, on board a Falcon 50 aircraft of the 31st Wing of the Air Force. The infant, protected by a thermal cot and accompanied by a medical team, was then transferred by ambulance to be immediately admitted to the intensive care unit of the “Bambino Gesù” hospital. The transport request was received from the Prefecture of Cagliari by the Summit Situations Room of the Air Force's Air Squad Command, the operational room of the Air Force which, among its duties, has the task of authorising and managing these types of missions for the benefit of the population. The Summit Situations Room therefore ordered the urgent take-off of a Falcon 50, one of the assets that the Armed Force keeps ready 24 hours a day for these kinds of emergencies. The aircraft departed from Ciampino for Cagliari, from where it then took off, once the baby had been boarded, at around 3:30 PM. After less than an hour of flight, the Falcon landed at Ciampino airport, where the thermal cot was transferred to the ambulance for immediate transport to the “Bambino Gesù” hospital. The aircraft then returned to Ciampino airport, where it resumed service readiness. Missions of this type require the utmost speed and flexibility. As the four transport missions have shown, the Italian Air Force Flight Departments are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of operating in any weather condition to ensure the urgent transport not only of people in imminent danger of death, but also of organs, medical teams, or even ambulances.
