Press release no. 81/2017 SARDINIA: ITALIAN AIR FORCE HELICOPTER RESCUES LIFE-THREATENED TOURIST ON BOARD A CRUISE SHIP
In the late morning of today, Wednesday 13 December, an AB 212 helicopter of the 80th Combat SAR (Search And Rescue) Centre of Decimomannu, part of the 15th Wing of the Italian Air Force, intervened to rescue a South Korean passenger who suffered a stroke on board a cruise ship located approximately 160 km south-west of the Sardinian coast. Following activation by the Air Operations Command of Poggio Renatico (Ferrara) and after embarking a 118 emergency medical doctor, the military helicopter took off from the Decimomannu military base. After reaching the ship, the crew hoisted the patient into a winchable stretcher. At the end of the rescue operations, the helicopter transported the life-threatened man to the Brotzu hospital in Cagliari for the necessary medical treatment. The 80th C/SAR Centre is one of the units of the 15th Wing of the Italian Air Force that ensures 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the search and rescue of flight crews in difficulty, and also contributes to public utility activities such as the search for missing persons at sea or in the mountains, emergency medical transport of patients in imminent danger of life and the rescue of severely traumatised individuals.
